IT’S MILLER TIME IN ORLANDO
Orlando Fantasy team history: ZERO snaps. THREE head coaches. Not exactly the ideal way for a new club to get off the ground. As the expansion franchise prepares for its inaugural LFL campaign, plenty of Majesty-esque drama has already unfolded. A season’s worth, actually. So, you can imagine how thrilled the players are to finally have some apparent stability. That stability comes in the form of Doug Miller.
Orlando is hoping the third time’s the charm. Head man number one, Ben Bennett stepped aside. Then came the unceremonious departure of Kenny McEntyre. Enter Miller. The big man with big plans, moves from defensive coordinator to head coach. Before he accepted the gig though, he met with his team. He wanted to make sure they were comfortable with a member of the Bennett-McEntyre staff taking over. He wanted the players to know they wouldn’t be burned again. They took Miller at his word. Now the focus is solely on football.
“After meeting with our great group of athletes I was welcomed with open arms,” Miller said. “They know my attitude from my time as an assistant and they know I want to create a winning atmosphere. The chemistry is there. The girls are ready and I’m ready. It’s time to rock and roll.” Miller has vowed to promote a straight ahead, hard-nosed brand of football. “We are going to go full speed, hit hard, and knock people’s heads off,” said Miller. Tough talk. But is it a fantasy or does he have the fire power to deliver victories?
If you look at his field general, you may think Miller is on to something. Veronica Moor has shined at the quarterback position during training camp. The signal caller works hard on her game, not only on practice days, but during off days as well. The Corona, California product has showcased her accuracy by tossing balls through inner tubes and drilling cones from better than half a LFL field away. Miller expects this pre-season success to carry on into the regular season.
“This whole LFL experience is new to me,” Miller said. “I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I have to tell you, I am pleasantly surprised. These girls are athletic and smart. This is real football.” That it is…and things get very real in a matter of weeks. Miller intends to be ready. “We have a lot of drive and a lot of players hungry for wins,” Miller said.
A new rule may benefit the Fantasy as well. This season, teams will likely be required to pass twice every four downs instead of once every four. Miller welcomes that rule book revision. “When my offensive coordinator and I heard about that change we smiled at each other cheek to cheek,” Miller said. “We expected to be a pass first, wide open offense anyway. With this new rule I can unleash Veronica even more.”
New rules and a strong armed quarterback aside; Orlando is still an expansion team. The Miamis, Philadelphias, and Tampas of the world know what to expect. The Fantasy does not. Miller, however thinks that may not be a negative. “Our girls have nothing to lose,” Miller said. “They will go out there and throw caution to the wind. Plus the other teams don’t have any film on us yet. I think we are going to surprise a lot of people.”
Confidence is not a problem with Miller and it likely won’t be in short supply on his roster either. The goals are high. Miller actually predicted recently that his team will be in the Lingerie Bowl when all is said and done. The man who loves this violent game with all his heart also loves peace. He signs all of his emails and letters “Deuces” as in two fingers up…a peace sign. Now it’s time to get down to brass tax. We’ll see if Miller can put at least a deuce in the win column for a chance at an unexpected playoff bid.
