Raiders lose Randall for the season
By John Packett
March 20, 2011
The Richmond Raiders lost their kicker and their quarterback Saturday night, but still managed to win their season opener in the Southern Indoor Football League.
Former Virginia Tech QB Bryan Randall, who passed for 285 yards and seven touchdowns, left the game with a little under three minutes to go with a right knee injury.
According to Raiders coach James Fuller, Randall suffered a torn ACL and is likely gone for the rest of the season.
"He was getting in sync with everything," said wide receiver Redd Thompson, who caught eight passes for 136 yards and four TDs. "With the team we have, to lose our quarterback like that so early in the season is tough, but everybody pulled together.
"We've got a great quarterback that came in and replaced him, but that was a big loss."
The Raiders took the lead for good on an 8-yard pass from Randall to former James Madison star Rodney Landers with 2:55 left. A two-point conversion pass from Randall to ex-Virginia State standout Antwun Williams made it 53-48.
An interception on a tipped pass by another former Hokie, Noland Burchette, on the ensuing possession gave Richmond the ball at Trenton's 4, and Randall was hurt on the first play. He had to be helped off the field.
