Erie's indoor football now in SIFL
November 16. 2010
From staff reports
Erie's indoor football team has a new place to play.
The former Erie Storm, an American Indoor Football Association member the past two seasons, has moved to the Southern Indoor Football League reportedly as part of a merger between the two leagues.
Six AIFA franchises -- the now unnamed Erie team, Harrisburg Stampede, Carolina Speed, Fayetteville (N.C.) Guard, Richmond (Va.) Raiders and Trenton (N.J.) Steel have joined the SIFL, a 3-year-old league featuring 16 teams from 10 states ranging from Pennsylvania to Texas, according to a news release on the AIFA website. AIFA co-founders John Morris and Michael Mink split AIFA into East and West leagues, with East joining SIFL and West operating independently, the release stated.
Erie joins Trenton and Harrisburg in the Eastern Conference's Northeast Division. The East also has Mid Atlantic and South divisions. The Western Conference has Gulf and Southwest divisions.
Gary Tufford, who coached the Erie Invaders of the Indoor Football League in 2000, serves as SIFL commissioner. On Monday, he unveiled the schedule for the 2011 season, which begins March 18.
Erie, which joins Trenton and Harrisburg in the Eastern Conference's Northeast Division, opens its season on March 20 at Harrisburg. Erie plays its home opener April 8 against Trenton.
The playoffs begin with the conference semifinals June 18, followed by the conference finals June 25 and the league championship game July 2. Tufford didn't return a phone message Monday.
