CORPUS CHRISTI — Following weeks of discussion, Hammerheads president Chad Dittman announced that the team will be joining the eight-member Southern Indoor Football League next season.
“We felt like it was the best fit for the Hammerheads and fans,” Dittman said in a statement. “We will also be adding a team this week in the Rio Grande Valley market. It will be a great rivalry.”
SIFL president Thom Hager said the Corpus Christi market will be a positive addition to the league. Hager said the Hammerheads were the top rival of the Louisiana Swashbucklers when they both played in the Intense Football League.
“Fans were so disappointed when the Hammerheads and the Swashbucklers joined different leagues in 2009,” Hager said.
In addition to the Swashbucklers, located in Lake Charles, the Hammerheads will join SIFL franchises in Lafayette, La., Mobile, Ala., Columbus and Albany in Georgia, Greenville, S.C., and Hidalgo.
“We’ve played in the National Indoor Football League, the Intense Football League, and the Indoor Football League. After reviewing the business model of the SIFL, I’m more excited than ever to be in this business,” Dittman said. “Far too many teams have come and gone due to budgets that could never produce profits. When a team folds it’s not the owners who suffer the greatest loss, it’s the fans. The SIFL is all about the fans, the safety of the players, and profitability.”
Dittman said he expects the league to add franchises in Houston and San Antonio. Other potential markets for the SIFL are Laredo, Austin, Tyler, Beaumont, Biloxi and Jackson in Mississippi, Houma, La., Knoxville, Tenn., and Macon and Augusta in Georgia.
Last season, the Hammerheads finished at 6-8 in the IFL’s Intense Conference Lonestar East Division, losing to Arkansas in the first round of the playoffs.
