SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - The battle for Sioux City mayor was between two men who had held the title before. When the ballots settled, it was 5,304 for Bob Scott and 5,191 for Padgett. Just 113-votes separated the candidates.
When Bob Scott and Tom Padgett squared off in October, Padgett found himself ahead by nine hundred votes. Scott credits his team for making up the ground.
"We've been gone for 14 years, and so it took us a lot of time to get name recognition built back up and fortunately we had volunteers who were willing to commit the time and energy to get it done for us," said Bob Scott, Mayor Elect.
Scott and Padgett have worked on the council together in the past. While both were nominated by their peers on the council to be mayor, this was the first time they were directly elected by voters. Padgett says his opponent's spending in the final days of the race put Scott over the top. But, he also believes something else was at play.
"There were kind of buy-one get one free voters out there. A lot of word on the street, 'well gee if Bob wins, then Tom will still be around for a couple of years,' and hard to fight," said Padgett.
He still has two years left in his term.
Woodbury County Auditor Pat Gill says voter turnout was 25%, the highest for a city election in 16 years.
And he believes it was this contest that drove people to the polls.
"Minor league pro football is a weird universe filled with bounced checks, unpaid bills, empty promises, out-right lies, empty arenas, endless women, endless booze, occasionally drugs, endless trips on rented buses to towns on the outskirts of the Big Time and, for one night a week, a football game." -- Bill Shea
Topeka, KS – The American Professional Football League wishes to extend our congratulations to 2011 Champion Sioux City Bandits owner Bob Scott on being elected to serve as the Mayor of Sioux City.
“We are happy whenever anyone of the members of the APFL family achieves new heights and goals,” said League President Ralph Adams, “our best wishes are with him as he takes on this new endeavor.”
Scott, who served on the city council from 1986 through 1998, will take over from his opponent, who has been serving as the current mayor pro tem, starting in January.
