The Iowa Blackhawks finally beat the Mid-Missouri Outlaws for the first time in three tries Friday night in Council Bluffs, 41-37. The Blackhawks overcame two second half turnovers and got an interception late in the game while down trailing 37-33 with just over 3 minutes left. They drove down the fields in a handful of plays and scored a touchdown with just over a minute and change remaining. Now with a 39-37 lead, Coach Wolff decided to go for two points on the PAT. CF4L and I were discussing it and I thought they should kick the PAT to go up by three points, especially since the Outlaws kicker was hitting everything (he made a FG from his own end zone and another one from around his own 1 yard line) and they could then play for the win by getting just a FG if the Blackhawks failed to get the PAT. CF4L was all for going for two points since it would give the Blackhawks a tiebreaker advantage for the playoffs over the Outlaws if they both finish the season with the same record (since the Outlaws had previously beaten the Blackhawks by 3 points). Well, they went for two and Chuck Wright threw a pass to WR in the back of the corner of the end zone who caught it on the wall, and was then pushed over by an Outlaw, for the 2 point conversion to go up 41-37. It proved crucial in deciding the game, because the Outlaws did have to go for the TD to win after that and they drove all the way down to the Blackhawks 2 yard line before fumbling the ball away on a bad snap with 9 seconds left in the game...giving the Blackhawks the win and home field advantage in the APFL Playoffs next month.
That's the second time I've seen Coach Wolff go for a 2 point conversion with the game on line. The first time I saw him do that was back during the 2005 APFL Championship Game in Topeka, Kansas when the Blackhawks were down 23-16 to the Kansas Koyotes with 11 seconds remaining. Iowa scored a touchdown on a pass from Wright to Yano Jones and Coach Wolff decided to win the game then and there by going for the 2 point conversion and avoid overtime. The two point conversion ended up successfully then as well on another pass from Wright to Jones and the Blackhawks led 24-23. Unfortunately in that game however, Kansas had a great kickoff return to midfield and kicked the game winning FG to beat the Blackhawks as time expired 26-24.
At least with Friday night's game, the Blackhawks erase some of the sting from last year when they blew a 35-0 lead over the Outlaws and lost 54-49.
The Blackhawks announcer in this game was quite annoying, talking after the teams broke the huddle, even talking during plays. Someone needs to explain the rules to the clown.
Too bad I won't be able to see anymore Blackhawk games, but at least they get home field advantage and a good chance to repeat as APFL Champs.
