Bandits run things the right way; Rest of APFL -- take note

SIOUX CITY -- I've got a bone to pick with the American Professional Football League.
It's all about statistics. Call up the American Professional Football League website and check out the link for statistics.
Oh, that's right! There are none.
Statistics were never a problem when the Bandits played in the National Indoor Football League from 2001-04. United Indoor Football offered the same service from 2005-07. The Indoor Football League did the same from 2008-10.
Sports writers and broadcasters prepare for their games by analyzing the statistics for the two teams they are about the cover. No problem with the defending APFL champion Sioux City Bandits. You can look at their stats by calling up www.qkstats.com and press the link to the Bandits and SHAZAM they are there, from the 70-40 season-opening win over Oklahoma on March 24 to last Saturday's 70-30 victory against Colorado.
Preparing for last Saturday's game at the Tyson Events Center was a nightmare. The fact that Colorado is a first-year team in the league is no excuse.
The only thing that was known about Colorado on the day before the game was this -- the Lightning lost 42-39 to Mid-Missouri on March 31. Colorado was driving in the game's closing minutes, but Mid-Missouri made the stop.
There was no mention of the players involved. There were no statistics from the game made available on Mid-Missouri website.
Attempts were made the day before the game to contact officials from Mid-Missouri to send statistics. Nothing arrived.
Ditto with officials from Colorado.
This sportswriter was dumbfounded. He felt kind of like Bandits Coach Erv Strohbeen, who said on Thursday night the film sent from Colorado was so fuzzy he got a headache, gave up looking at it and chose to concentrate on his team instead.
The Bandits, incidentally, are blessed to have statisticians Randy Kascht and Mike Olsen in charge of the crew that helps media and coaches alike. Other teams around this league should take note.
"Minor league pro football is a weird universe filled with bounced checks, unpaid bills, empty promises, out-right lies, empty arenas, endless women, endless booze, occasionally drugs, endless trips on rented buses to towns on the outskirts of the Big Time and, for one night a week, a football game." -- Bill Shea
