Saginaw Sting put on offensive display in season-opening rout of Marion
SAGINAW, MI — The Saginaw Sting went into their season opener against Marion a different team than the undefeated championship squad from a season ago.
But the Sting proved to be just as effective.
A preseason championship ring ceremony and unveiling of last season’s championship banner preceded kickoff, however, that was the only thing that could slow down Saginaw, which jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter en route to a 49-28 win.
“I’m never satisfied,” Saginaw coach Fred Townsend said. “I tell the guys that all the time, but I’m very happy with what I saw of our potential.”
Saginaw Heritage graduate Deshawn Hayes kicked off his Saginaw Sting career to the tune of 10 carries for 98 yards and four touchdowns, while new quarterback A.J. McKenna threw for 131 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 25 yards and another score.
“We have a running game this year,” Townsend said. “Now we have to put the pieces together to establish the run and the pass.”
Marion scored on the first play of the second quarter to draw within six, but that jumpstarted an offensive onslaught for Saginaw that saw the Sting score 22 straight points to take a commanding 42-14 lead.
The Blue Racers answered with a pair of touchdown passes from Adam Neugebauer to Aric Evans to make it 42-28, but the Sting emphasized their season-opening win with a 47-yard touchdown run from Hayes to complete the scoring.
“Our guys were in shape and that helped,” Townsend said. “Physically, we could outlast them over four quarters.”
McKenna got the Sting going on their first possession of the game when he marched Saginaw down the field and gave it the first lead on a 1-yard plunge.
Marion came right back with a two-play drive that culminated in a 3-yard score from 280-pound defensive lineman Thomas McKenzie to tie it 7-7.
However, the next two Saginaw possessions saw Deshawn Hayes and Charles Tarver take turns running for touchdowns to give Saginaw a two-touchdown lead at 20-7 that the Sting wouldn’t relinquish.
Daryl Gooden led Saginaw receiving with six catches for 96 yards and a score.
Marion’s Andre Barbosa had nine receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown.
