BLOOMINGTON, Ill. | Bloomington could not find a way to cover Eddie Pertilla and Scott Jensen took advantage of it over and over again.
Five times to be exact.
Led by that impressive opening-night showing, the Sioux City Bandits downed the Bloomington (Ill.) Edge 62-56 on Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
Jensen, who had seven total touchdowns in the game adding touchdown runs of five and two yards in the first half, found Pertilla on scoring strikes of 2, 43, 22, 34 and 5 yards.
The victory was the 29th straight for the Bandits and the first in the new Champions Professional Indoor Football League.
The Edge closed within five points at 40-35 when David Knighton found Jasonus Tillery from 11 yards out with 4:57 to go in the third quarter, but the Bandits responded as they did all game long.
The biggest setback of the night for the Bandits came on the line where Nick Dean was lost to injury in the first quarter, and Nehemiah Blackburn appeared to suffer a significant injury that left him on the field for several minutes in the third quarter.
On the first play after the injury, Jensen found Pertilla – who had 145 yards receiving -- on a 34-yard strike to make the score 47-35.
The fourth quarter saw the two teams combine for five touchdowns, but the Edge could get no closer than five points. Bandit running back Fredrick Bruno had three key runs in the final two minutes to help Sioux City run out the clock and preserve the win.
The Edge scored first in the game on a 6-yard run by Andre Raymond to go up 7-0, but the Bandits were quick to respond behind the running of Drew Prohaska, who scored from two yards out. The Bandits would take the lead for the first time in the game when Jensen found Pertilla on a 44-yard touchdown strike.
Jensen finished the game with 173 yards passing and ran for another 41 yards.
A missed field goal by Nick Hope left the Bandits up 13-7 after the first quarter.
Bruno, who caused problems for the Edge during the entire first half, gave the Bandits a 13-point lead when he found the end zone from six yards out.
The Edge responded quickly with a 13-yard TD strike, but the score was wiped off the board with a Bloomington penalty. However, the Edge would hit pay dirt again by scoring on a 17-yard pass a couple of plays later to close within 20-14.
Bloomington’s LaVaughn Macon would return a kick 50-plus yards for a touchdown to bring his team within 26-21, but Jensen would give the Bandits some breathing room just before half with a 2-yard rushing score to put Sioux City up 11 at halftime with the missed extra point, 32-21.
The Bandits host the Kansas City Renegades on Friday at the Tyson Events Center with a 7:05 p.m. kickoff.
